Graph visualization is a separate and extensive field. It has many studies, a lot of software, several books, and an annual international conference.

In a good layout of a graph, it's important to care not only about edge crossings, but also about many other aspects. Usually, the graph image should reveal important properties of the graph: hierarchical structure, cliques, high-degree vertices, symmetries. For example, in social network visualization, high-degree vertices can be emphasized.
