Let’s see how the recursion tree changed after our optimizations. For example, we no longer continue the branch \((17,9,7)\): it already exceeds the target. And we don’t continue the rightmost branch \(\varnothing\): since we didn’t take 17, we definitely won’t get more than \(9+7+3=19\), and by that time the variable \(\texttt{optimum}\) will already equal 27.
